An automobile lies mangled beneath a Los Angeles Railway streetcar in Leimert Park on November 27, 1929.
According to a Los Angeles Times report, the streetcar was traveling 25 miles per hour down Leimert Blvd. when the automobile drove directly across the tracks. The automobile’s driver, George Conley, died instantly, but the trolley dragged the much lighter vehicle nearly 90 feet before coming to a complete stop. Conley, the Times reported, had previously portrayed Abraham Lincoln on film.

Before Disneyland, there were ostrich farms. In the late 19th-century, tourists flocked to Southern California’s ostrich farms to gawk at the ungainly birds. Learn more with L.A. as Subject’s latest KCET contribution: “An Ornithological Curiosity: When Ostriches Ruled SoCal Tourism.”
