Westlake Park (later MacArthur Park), circa 1892. The park’s lake began as a naturally occurring alkaline pond. The Wilshire Boulevard causeway divided the lake in 1934, and in 1942 the city renamed the park after Douglas MacArthur, a longtime general in the United States Army.

Highland Park, circa 1894-96. The tracks of the Santa Fe Railway — now the Metro Gold Line right-of-way — curve away from the viewer toward the northeast. In the center of the photo, a streetcar travels down Pasadena Avenue, since renamed Figueroa Street.

1890 view of the Sackett Hotel and Store at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Cahuenga Drive. Horace and Ellen Sackett built the hotel in 1888. Today it is the site of the four-story Creque Building.
