The last Red Car left Los Angeles on this day in 1961, bound for the Orange Empire Trolley Museum in Perris.
Service on the last remaining line of the old Pacific Electric Railway system, which had been taken over by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority, ended on April 9, 1961. The MTA sold most of the cars to a salvage firm, but trolley collector and Pacific Electric file clerk Walter Abbenseth (pictured in the photo) purchased the last one for $1,200 and then had it towed to the Inland Empire museum.
